Unshaven Mavens

The men of our city spend a whole month growing their moustaches for fundraisers like Movember & Moustaches for Kids. It seems as though we should make a stand and do something to support a female cause too!

So, Amie Beausoleil and Malorie Bertrand, two amazing women with a purpose, got to thinking…why can’t women make THEIR men suffer and grow something for a cause?

With this, Unshaven Mavens was born and the rest is hairy.

“Unshaven Mavens will grow their underarm hair for the entire month of October, all the while raising funds for Rethink Breast Cancer, a Canadian breast cancer charity that brings bold, relevant awareness to the under-40 crowd. Unshaven Mavens will zero in on the armpit because early breast cancer symptoms can be detected in the underarm area, not just the breast.

The growing season begins at the Clean-Shave Day Kick-Off (October 1st) and for four hair raising weeks thereafter. During the growing season, Mavens and Sponsors (we like to call them “Bosom Buddies”) have the opportunity to meet up at weekly Pit Stops to give each other moral support, enjoy a beverage or two, and compare their progress. Oh did we mention, we take pictures? At the end of four weeks, a Final Red Carpit Bash is held to determine who will hold the title of “Pit Boss” (most funds raised), “Most Pitiful” (least hair growth), “Jolie Pit” (nicest pit), and “Brad Pitt” (most hair growth) and to hand out prizes.

Unshaven Mavens will be a diverse group of women who all share at least two things in common – a desire to make a difference and the ability to not take themselves too seriously.”

I took part in this project and let me tell you, it was fun fun fun!  To prepare for the project, I had the opportunity to go out with the girls and take promo shots for their website.  Here are the photos:)

In its first year, the Unshaven Mavens project raised an amazing $8,142 for Rethink Breast Cancer. WOW! Impressive.

To see photos of the growth which were submitted by the growers click here.  You’ll even get to see yours truly…:)  Here’s a preview of my month’s growth.
